Trees are everything: real life victims of climate change and our best real hope for climate mitigation. They are also great teachers of how to share and live in community, something humanity seems to have collectively forgotten, especially in cities. At a symbolic level they stand for life and hope, wisdom and perseverance, qualities that we must cling to and explore profoundly in our strange and troubled times. They have stood the test of time and, although this wave of anthropogenic climate change will inevitably lead to tree loss and extinction of some species, others will survive and adapt and forge the climate of the future. If we are wise and follow their lead, that future will include a wiser and more collective human community.
